What is a bunion?

A bunion often appears as a “bump”, but it’s a bone deformity and misalignment of the MTP joint (where the long foot bone and toe bone meet). The “bump” is a structural change in the foot’s framework. This change in structure causes the big toe to angle towards the smaller toes, and is often accompanied by an inflamed bursa (fluid-filled sac).

How did this happen? Possible Causes of a Bunion

Bunions are typically the result of multiple factors, including but not limited to inherited foot structure/predisposition, narrow or unsupportive footwear, repetitive foot stress, and inflammatory conditions, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Are you experiencing persistent pain at the base of your big toe? Is it worse when you wear shoes? If so, it may be a bunion.
